How do boat loans work?
A boat loan lets you buy a new or used boat now and repay it over a set term, usually from 1 to 7 years, subject to lender criteria. It can cover a trailer boat, a larger cruiser, a jet ski or a new motor, from a dealer, a private seller or an auction. We lend Australia-wide.
Financfy compares boat finance across our panel of 49+ lenders, then applies to the lender whose criteria best match you. We start with a soft credit check that doesn’t affect your credit score.
Buying for personal use or for your business?
For personal use
Buying it for yourself or your family? You can apply for a personal (consumer) loan. There’s no ABN or business-use requirement. Lenders have their own criteria for personal loans: if you’re employed, they usually look at your payslips, your employment and your living expenses.
For your business
If you have an ABN and the boat will be used at least 50% for your business, you can apply for a business loan. With some lenders your ABN can be from 3 months old, and low doc options mean you don’t need to provide tax returns or financials. See finance with a new ABN and low doc loan documents.

Once the loan is approved, the lender pays the seller and you repay the loan over the agreed term, usually 1 to 7 years, subject to lender criteria. Most boat loans are secured by the boat itself.

Yes. Lenders usually ask for the seller’s details and the boat’s details, such as rego and the hull identification number (HIN), plus a quick e-inspection done through a third party like Verimoto or Redbook. The seller gets an SMS and email and takes photos to confirm it. We also run a PPSR check to make sure there’s no money owing on it. Auctions are usually treated like a dealer purchase. Not always. Some lenders don’t need a deposit, while others may ask for one depending on your situation, the boat and the loan amount. We’ll tell you up front.

Yes, if you have an ABN and the boat will be used at least 50% for your business. With some lenders you can apply with an ABN from 3 months, depending on your circumstances. No. We start with a soft credit check that doesn’t affect your credit score. Your credit file is only affected when an application is submitted to a lender, and we only apply to the lender whose criteria best match your situation.
